This week sees two years since Ethiopian Schools for the
Poor – English Alive became a charity. It is amazing to think how much we have
progressed since then, with this formal status enabling us to successfully gain
grants and sponsorships , thus making the slow and steady progression of
English Alive possible !
This week
was also the start of the month long volunteering of Jared and Katie – our
latest volunteers from the USA. After a month of travelling in the North of the
country , they are enjoying the stability of staying in one place and
thoroughly enjoyed their first day of work – that of World Book Day.
This is the
first year of celebrating different days throughout the year and it really is becoming
very successful – providing an educational change to the usual day to day
school. World book day was celebrated with a story , subsequent discussion and
practical activities such as dramatically enacting different book scenes or
making maps of the path that the different
characters took, culminating at the end of the day with pupils receiving little
paper bracelets.
Our next
big event is that of World poetry day on the 21st March and World
Water Day on the 22nd March by which time we are hoping that we have
some new amazing water related things which will dramatically change the pupils’
lives!! – watch this space !
